Chapter One — The Message
Rain lashes the windows as Mara Vance sits alone at her kitchen table, staring at the framed photograph beside her coffee cup. The photograph shows Lena. Her older sister smiles beneath a Texas summer sun, one hand shielding her eyes from the glare. Her dark hair falls across one shoulder. The silver cross around her neck catches the light. Mara reaches toward the frame.
“I miss you.”
The words leave her mouth before she realizes she speaks them aloud.
Fourteen months have passed since Lena’s funeral.
Fourteen months since Mara watches a coffin disappear beneath the earth.
Fourteen months since she hears the pastor read Psalm 34:18.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.
Mara clings to that verse whenever grief presses against her chest.
Tonight, however, the verse offers little comfort.
Her husband, Daniel, still hasn’t come home.
She checks the clock.
11:46 p.m.
Daniel promises dinner before nine.
Then he stops answering his phone.
Mara tries again.
Straight to voicemail.
She sets her phone beside the photograph and closes her eyes.
“Lord, please help me.”
A vibration rattles across the table.
Mara opens her eyes.
A text message appears.
She reaches for the phone.
Her stomach tightens.
The message comes from Lena’s number.
Mara stares.
No.
Her hand trembles.
She opens the message.
DON’T TRUST DANIEL.
Mara stops breathing.
The room suddenly feels smaller.
She reads the words again.
DON’T TRUST DANIEL.
Her fingers hover above the screen.
Lena’s number remains saved in Mara’s contacts.
She never deletes it.
She cannot explain why.
Perhaps some part of her still refuses to accept the grave.
Mara presses CALL.
The phone rings.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Someone answers.
Mara sits perfectly still.
“Hello?”
Silence.
“Who has this phone?”
A faint crackle reaches her ear.
Then a whisper.
“Run.”
The call ends.
Mara drops the phone.
Her coffee cup trembles as her hand strikes the table.
She stares toward the hallway.
Daniel’s shoes sit beside the front door.
His jacket hangs on the coat rack.
His keys rest in the bowl.
Everything looks normal.
Except Daniel never leaves without his wedding ring.
Mara stands.
She walks toward the bedroom.
“Daniel?”
Nothing.
She pushes open the bedroom door.
The room sits empty.
The bed remains unmade.
His laptop rests on the nightstand.
Mara checks the bathroom.
Empty.
She opens the closet.
Daniel’s clothes remain.
She turns toward the floor.
Something catches her attention.
A small object lies beneath the dresser.
Mara kneels.
She reaches underneath.
Her fingers close around cold metal.
Daniel’s wedding ring.
Blood stains the gold.
Mara’s heart pounds.
She drops the ring.
“No.”
She backs away.
Her phone vibrates again.
Another message.
HE KNOWS YOU HAVE THE FILE.
Mara stares at the screen.
“What file?”
A third message arrives.
LOOK UNDER YOUR SISTER’S GRAVE.
Mara’s blood runs cold.
She grabs her coat.
Her Bible rests on the kitchen counter.
She reaches for it automatically.
Her fingers touch the worn leather.
For a moment, she hesitates.
Then she opens it.
The pages fall naturally toward Psalm 23.
Her eyes settle on one sentence.
Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.
Mara closes her eyes.
“Give me courage.”
She slips the Bible into her purse.
Then she hears the front door unlock.
Mara freezes.
Someone enters.
Footsteps move across the hardwood floor.
Slow.
Deliberate.
She retreats into the kitchen.
A man’s voice rises from the hallway.
“Mara?”
Daniel.
Relief floods her for half a second.
Then she remembers the blood.
She grabs the kitchen knife.
“Daniel?”
He steps into view.
His shirt carries dark stains.
His face looks pale.
His eyes immediately drop toward the knife.
“Mara, put that down.”
“What happened?”
“Where did you get my ring?”
“Why does it have blood on it?”
Daniel looks toward the hallway.
“Who’s here?”
“No one.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I need you to trust me.”
Mara laughs bitterly.
“You picked the worst possible night for that request.”
Daniel takes one step toward her.
She raises the knife.
“Stay there.”
He stops.
“Mara, listen carefully.”
“No. You listen.”
She lifts her phone.
“Lena’s number just sent me a message.”
Daniel’s face changes.
Mara notices.
“You know something.”
Daniel says nothing.
“You know something about Lena.”
“I know she died.”
“Then why do you look terrified?”
He glances toward the windows.
“Mara, someone watches this apartment.”
She turns toward the glass.
Rain streaks the city lights.
“What?”
“Don’t stand near the window.”
“Who watches us?”
Daniel reaches inside his jacket.
Mara raises the knife.
“Don’t.”
He slowly removes a folded photograph.
He places it on the counter.
Mara approaches.
The photograph shows Daniel standing beside Lena.
Behind them, a warehouse burns.
Mara picks up the picture.
“When did this happen?”
Daniel looks at her.
“Tomorrow.”
Mara’s stomach twists.
She flips the photograph over.
Three words appear in black ink.
YOU SAW NOTHING.
“What does this mean?”
Daniel steps closer.
“It means someone wants you frightened.”
“Who?”
He looks directly into her eyes.
“Your sister.”
Mara shakes her head.
“Lena cannot hurt me.”
Daniel’s expression hardens.
“You don’t understand.”
A gunshot cracks outside.
The kitchen window explodes.
Mara drops to the floor.
Daniel tackles her beneath the table.
Another bullet tears through the wall.
“Stay down!”
Mara grabs his arm.
“Who’s shooting?”
Daniel looks toward the shattered window.
Then he whispers:
“The people who killed your sister.”
Mara stares at him.
“You said Lena died.”
“I lied.”
Silence fills the kitchen.
Mara’s heart pounds.
“Why?”
Daniel reaches into his pocket.
He pulls out a small black envelope.
He places it in her hand.
“Because Lena never died.”
Mara looks at the envelope.
Then at Daniel.
Then toward the broken window.
Another gunshot echoes across the night.
Daniel grabs her hand.
“Run.”
Mara opens the envelope.
A photograph slips out.
She looks down.
Her breath catches.
Lena stands beneath a streetlight.
Alive.
Smiling.
And beside her stands a little girl who looks exactly like Mara.
The photograph carries tomorrow’s date.
August 12, 2026.
Mara slowly looks at Daniel.
“Who is that child?”
Daniel’s face loses its color.
Then someone whispers from the hallway:
“Mara?”
She knows that voice.
Lena.
And the lights go out…To be continued…
